Reversed Polarity: Is It Dangerous?
During PAT Testing, one of the faults we occasionally come across is reversed polarity, where the Live and Neutral wires have been swapped inside the plug top.
A common question is: “If the appliance still works, why is it a problem?”
Why Does the Appliance Still Work?
In many appliances, especially simpler ones like lamps, the circuit will still complete even if the Live and Neutral are reversed. This means the item may appear to function normally. However, just because it works does not mean it is safe.
Why Is Reversed Polarity Dangerous?
In UK electrical systems: The Live (brown) wire carries the voltage and the Neutral (blue) wire safely returns current
When wired correctly: The switch disconnects the Live and the appliance is safe when switched off
When polarity is reversed: The switch may only disconnect the Neutral which means the Internal components can remain live even when switched off
This creates a serious safety risk, including: Electric shock when changing bulbs or accessing components, Increased risk of electrical faults and Protection systems not working as intended
Why It Fails a PAT Test
PAT Testing includes checks for correct polarity to ensure appliances are wired safely and operate as designed.
If the Live and Neutral are reversed:
The appliance will fail the test
It must be corrected before it can be safely used

The Good News – It’s Easily Fixed
In most cases, this issue is quick and straightforward to resolve.
By opening the plug top and correctly wiring:
Brown → Live
Blue → Neutral
Green/Yellow → Earth
…the appliance can be safely brought back into compliance and pass testing.
The Importance of Proper Wiring
Faults like reversed polarity are not always obvious, and appliances can appear to work perfectly fine despite being unsafe.
This is why thorough PAT Testing and proper visual inspection are so important, ensuring that equipment is not just working, but safe.
