Frequently Ask Questions
What counts as a portable appliance?
A portable appliance is any electrical item that is connected to the mains via a plug and flexible lead. This includes everything from large equipment like fridges, freezers, and microwaves, to smaller everyday items such as phone chargers, kettles, and toasters. If it plugs in, it likely qualifies for Portable Appliance Testing (PAT).
Which types of items require PAT testing?
Items that commonly need PAT testing include:
Portable appliances with a plug and flexible cable
IT equipment such as computers, printers, and monitors
Extension leads and power strips
Kitchen appliances in workplaces or rented properties
Basically, if it plugs in and is used in a work or rental environment, it should be tested regularly for safety.
Is PAT testing legally required every year?
Not exactly. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 state that electrical equipment must be maintained in a safe condition to prevent injury. However, the law does not specify a fixed PAT testing frequency. It's the responsibility of the business or landlord to ensure safe usage, typically through regular testing.
How often should PAT testing be carried out?
There is no universal PAT testing schedule—it depends on your risk assessment and how the equipment is used. For example:
A hotel bedside lamp may only need testing every 2 years
A power tool on a construction site may need testing every 3 to 6 months
Many of our clients in Tonbridge choose to test Class 1 appliances every 12 months and Class 2 appliances every 24 months, based on risk and usage.
What is the difference between Class 1 and Class 2 appliances?
Class 1 equipment requires an earth connection and includes basic insulation. Examples include microwaves, kettles, and some power tools.
Class 2 equipment has double or reinforced insulation and does not require an earth wire, making it safer. You can identify Class 2 appliances by the double square symbol on the label.
Do brand new appliances need PAT testing?
No. New electrical appliances are typically covered under the manufacturer’s warranty and are assumed to be safe upon delivery. However, it’s good practice to visually inspect new equipment before use and label it with the purchase/test date.
